Archaeological Workshop in Ashkelon

On Sunday, August 31st, the Youth Ministry Team had the unique opportunity to participate in an archaeological workshop held in the Antiquity Park in Ashkelon. This enriching experience combined history, hands-on learning, and fellowship in one of Israel’s most historically significant locations.

The workshop was conducted amidst the ruins of the ancient church Santa Maria in Viridis, beneath which lie the remains of a Roman palace. The event was thoughtfully prepared by Prof. Cecilia Maria Roberta Luschi from the University of Florence, Italy, and guided by Prof. Rafi Lewis from Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv.

Together with archaeology students from Florence, our youth were invited to explore the site, gaining insights from Prof. Lewis’s expert explanations. Participants also had the chance to contribute to the preservation of history by helping clean and uncover parts of the archaeological site.

After a morning of hard work under the sun, the group enjoyed a well-deserved lunch of shoarma at Ashkelon’s Marina, followed by a refreshing visit to Dlilah Beach, where many took a dip in the sea. The day concluded with a spiritually uplifting Holy Mass in Beer Sheva, bringing together the physical and spiritual dimensions of the journey.

This workshop was not only an educational experience but also a beautiful moment of community, discovery, and reflection. We are grateful to all who made it possible and look forward to more opportunities to connect with history and each other.

We express our gratitude to Prof. Luschi and Prof. Lewis for the organization and guidance of the workshop. We thank Monika, Danielle and Sarah for their help and Beer Sheva Community for the hospitality.
