About Jewish-Christian Relations

The Second Vatican Council document, "Nostra Aetate" (In our times), published on October 28, 1965, clarified the Church's attitude towards the other religions. It constitutes the foundation for an engagement in inter-religious dialogue.

In 2000, the National Jewish Scholar's Project published an important statement, signed by hundreds of Jewish rabbis, scholars and community leaders that sought to respond to the positive statements of the Christian churches with regard to Judaism and the Jewish people. The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) initiated a new epoch in the relations between Catholics and Jews. An important series of official documents have redefined the Church’s teaching on Judaism, the Jewish people and relations between Jews and Christians. These documents were then applied to the diverse realities of local churches.

Although the Synod for the Catholic Church in the Middle East, which was held in Rome in October, predominantly addressed internal Church issues, the Christians in the Middle East live as a minority among Muslim brothers in most countries of the Middle East and among Jewish brothers in the State of Israel.
