Father Giuseppe: "For us a child is born" (Isaiah 9:6)

Father Giuseppe of Koinonia Giovanni Battista sent us his thoughts on the great feast of the birth of Jesus.

The birth of a child is always a gift and being a gift brings great joy. What happened in Bethlehem was completely “normal” in the sense that we see a newborn baby being adored by His mother and father. However behind the “normality” of this event lies a new world that silently becomes natural and resolutely establishes itself in us and among us. This joyful event was foretold from of old. The Holy Scriptures gave witness that God was preparing something wonderful for us. But who could ever have imagined...?

Christmas helps us to understand why God confounded the people of Babel and did not allow them to build the tower that would have reached heaven: because He himself wanted to “descend” to us and so there was no need for us to “ascend” to him. In the fullness of time, and having nothing to do with our wishes and desires, He came and reached us and became one of us. This is the night of the meeting-clash of the world’s mentality (that wants to ascend to God) and Gods mentality (that wants to descend and to be the Emmanuel, which means “God with us”. There will always be opposition between the two mentalities, until Babel disappears from the heart of man and from all mankind. Only then will God be “all in all”. (1 Corinthians 15:28).
