A Visit of Encouragement in Difficult Times

On Wednesday, 18 March, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa visited the Vicariate of St. James for Hebrew-Speaking Catholics at the HaRav Kook House in Jerusalem. He joined the priests’ regular monthly meeting, offering guidance and support during this challenging period of war and uncertainty.

A Shepherd Close to His Priests and Their Communities

During his visit, Cardinal Pizzaballa expressed his sincere appreciation for the steadfast dedication of the priests serving in the Vicariate. He shared how grateful he was to hear that, despite the difficulties and fears caused by the ongoing war, the priests remain close to their communities - accompanying the faithful, praying with them, and sustaining hope in a time marked by anxiety and loss.

The Cardinal listened attentively as the priests described the pastoral realities in their communities: families under stress, young people living with constant tension, and many parishioners longing for reassurance and peace. He encouraged everyone to remain firm in faith and gentle in ministry, reminding the priests that “in moments of darkness, the presence of the Church becomes an even stronger sign of hope.”

Difficult Decisions in a Time of War

With regret, Cardinal Pizzaballa also shared several difficult decisions that the Latin Patriarchate has had to make due to the security situation.

He announced:

  • The cancellation of the traditional Palm Sunday procession on the Mount of Olives, usually a joyful moment of unity for all Christian communities in the Holy Land.
  • The postponement of the Chrism Mass, the annual gathering of all priests around their bishop - a moment that underlines the unity of the presbyterate and the renewal of priestly promises.

These decisions, though painful, were made out of concern for the safety of the faithful and clergy.

Hope Sustained by Faith

Throughout the meeting, the Cardinal emphasized that the mission of the Church continues even in times of war. He encouraged the priests to nurture hope, accompany those who suffer, and keep alive the prayer for peace that unites believers from all backgrounds.

As the meeting concluded, the spirit was one of renewed strength. In the midst of conflict, the Vicariate remains a home of faith, service, and perseverance - walking with its communities and praying fervently for peace in the Holy Land.
