19 new cardinals… and two Popes
On the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, February 22, 2014, Pope Francis installed 19 new cardinals. In a historical precedent, the ceremony was attended by another pope, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

A wonderful surprise: for the first time Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI attended the ceremony in which Pope Francis created 19 new cardinals. The 19 cardinals are:
– Archbishop Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State
– Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, Secretary General of the Synod
- Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
– Archbishop Beniamino Stella, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy
– Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Gerard Nichols (Great Britain)
– Archbishop of Managua Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano (Nicaragua)
– Archbishop of Québec Gérald Cyprien Lacroix (Canada)
– Archbishop of Abidjan Jean-Pierre Kutwa (Ivory Coast)
– Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro Orani João Tempesta, O.Cist. (Brazil)
– Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve Gualtiero Bassetti (Italy)
– Archbishop of Buenos Aires Mario Aurelio Poli (Argentina)
– Archbishop of Seoul Andrew Yeom Soo jung (Korea)
– Archbishop of Santiago de Chile Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, S.D.B. (Chile)
– Archbishop of Ouagadougou Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso)
– Archbishop of Cotabato Orlando B. Quevedo, O.M.I. (Philippines)
– Bishop of Les Cayes Chibly Langlois (Haiti)
Together with them, 3 retired archbishops, who are distinguished by their service to the Holy See and to the Church were also created cardinals:
- Archbishop Loris Francesco Capovilla, secretary to Pope John XXIII, who is 99 years old.
- Archbishop Fernando Sebastián Aguilar (Spain)
- Archbishop Emeritus of Castries Kelvin Edward Felix (Antilles).
