A Pilgrimage of Grace on Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel, a biblical symbol of fertility and blessing, was the destination of the Haifa community’s recent pilgrimage. As we climbed from the city toward the sanctuary of Muhraqa, the traditional site of Elijah’s sacrifice, we were captivated by the beauty of the mountain, whose greenery endures throughout the year.

Our day began with Morning Prayer in the underground chapel. We then reflected together during a catechesis on the silent yet enduring presence of the Prophet Elijah and of the countless Jewish, Muslim, and Christian pilgrims who have preserved his memory through the centuries. We also explored the history of the Carmelite Order and its deep roots in the Holy Land.

The Word of God proclaimed that day invited us to reject the idols that seek to take God’s place in our lives and promise a false happiness. Like Elijah confronting the prophets of Baal, we were called to renew our faith and trust in the living God.

From Muhraqa, we traveled to the Maronite Church of Saint Sharbel in Isfiya. There we shared lunch, enjoyed a time of rest, and learned more about the life of this beloved saint. Through his humility, hiddenness, and fidelity to Christ, Saint Sharbel continues to touch the lives of many people today through countless graces and miracles.

The pilgrimage concluded with the celebration of Holy Mass. Afterwards, we descended Mount Carmel and returned to Haifa, grateful for the many blessings and graces that God had bestowed upon us throughout this beautiful day of pilgrimage.
