As Custos, head of the Franciscans in the Holy Land, Archbishop Pizzaballa had met with the young people who initiated the Center and had supported their efforts in favor of the African asylum seekers in Jerusalem. The JACC was founded in 2008 by a group of young Israelis who sought to help the Africans (mostly Eritreans and Sudanese) who found themselves in Jerusalem. The Center offers lessons in language for adults, activities for children and youth, social-psychological assistance and aid with legal counseling and accompaniment to Israeli organisms.

Archbishop Pizzaballa, accompanied by Father David Neuhaus, Latin Patriarchal Vicar responsible for the presence of the Church among asylum seekers, was welcomed by the staff of the Center and heard from them an in depth description of the work of the center and of the situation of the asylum seekers in Israel.
