Today, we began a new extra curricula activity for the children who come to the Saint Rachel Center during the week. This activity takes place at the YMCA and they received it as a gift from Father Rafic and the Jerusalem kehilla. It lasts for two hours each time and includes two kinds of activity, one hour of games and one hour of sport.

When we arrived at the place, we were received by the responsible person whose name is Rima. She presented the children to the man who animated the first activity, the games, and his name is Nizar. He began with a short game to “break the ice” with the children and after that the two of them took the children for a light refreshment and a hot drink. After the children, of course, had enjoyed the refreshment, we went to another room and there the children began the activity. It included games like “Stop Dance” – a game in which the children had to dance all the while the music was playing and to freeze the moment the music stopped. After each phase the game got more difficult. Another game was the chairs game in a version for groups. Each time the animator chose a group of children from which there was one victor. Each victor stood on the side and in the end the victors competed against each other until there remained just one victor. It was great fun to watch from the side and see how the children enjoyed themselves. Even the older ones, who at the beginning complained that the games were childish, quickly changed their minds when they actually participated and took an active part!

At the end of the games, the children said farewell to Nizar for the activity. They had a five minute break until the next activity and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate. After the break, the returned to he room where a new animator was waiting for them, named Marcos. He taught them Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a king of martial art for self defense. In this activity, the children have to listen and learn new exercises. They learnt three exercises and after learning each one, they had to work in couples and then to present to everyone the exercise they had learnt, observed by the teacher. It was fascinating and surprising to to see that even our girls participated and enjoyed the activity!

In conclusion, the children enjoyed it enormously and even learnt a lot, especially that sport is not just football and basketball. The children will continue to attend this activity each Tuesday from now until the month of June regularly. An enormous thank you to Father Rafic and the members of the Jerusalem kehilla whose donation enables the children to enjoy this activity!
