At the site, the President was welcomed by the Benedictine Abbot, Father Gregory, and His Beatitude Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. In a meeting in the monastery refectory, the President met with a small group including Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, the Apostolic Nuncio in Israel, the deputy German Ambassador, those representing the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries in the Holy Land (including the Patriarch, three of his vicars, Bishop William Shomali, Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo and Father David Neuhaus and the Custos of the Holy Land, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa) and a small number of other invited guests.

The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere and the President assured those present of his deep concern for the safety and full integration of Christians in the State of Israel.
